WFP

The World Food Programme is the UN's food assistance agency, founded in 1961 and headquartered in Rome, funded entirely by voluntary contributions with the United States, Germany, and the EU as the largest donors. It won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. Its mandate has shifted over the decades from shipping food aid to a broader mix of cash transfers, school meals, nutrition programmes, and resilience-building, though emergency response remains its core identity. WFP has worked in Nepal since 1963. The country office is in Patan Dhoka, Lalitpur, with field presence in Nepalgunj, Surkhet, and Dhangadhi, reflecting a focus on the Karnali and far-western districts where food insecurity is chronic.

The Nepal programme centres on the national school meals programme (which WFP is handing over to the government), maternal and child nutrition, food security monitoring, climate resilience and asset creation in remote hill and mountain districts, and supply chain and logistics support to the government during disasters, including the 2015 earthquake response and periodic floods and landslides. It also runs the UN Humanitarian Air Service in Nepal on demand and supports the government's food security information system. Most implementation happens through cooperating partners, so WFP staff spend a good share of their time on programme management, monitoring, and government coordination rather than direct delivery.

For Nepalese candidates, WFP hires programme policy officers in nutrition, school feeding, resilience, food systems, and emergency preparedness, along with vulnerability analysis and mapping (VAM) analysts, monitoring and evaluation officers, and logistics and supply chain staff, the last being a WFP specialty that few other agencies recruit at scale. Support roles cover finance, HR, procurement, admin, and ICT. As with UNICEF, National Officer and General Service posts are open to Nepalese nationals and paid on the UN local scale, and the field offices are the easier entry point. WFP leans heavily on Service Contracts, Special Service Agreements, and consultancies, so a large proportion of its workforce is on shorter contracts tied to funding, and UN Volunteer placements are common at the junior level.
