International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is an intergovernmental knowledge and research centre based in Lalitpur, Kathmandu, founded in 1983. Its eight member countries are the ones that share the Hindu Kush Himalaya: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. Unlike ADB it does not lend money. It produces science, data, and policy advice on mountain issues such as glacier melt, river basin management, air pollution, biodiversity, disaster risk, and mountain livelihoods, and it tries to get eight governments that rarely agree on anything to cooperate on shared water and climate problems. Funding comes from member contributions and a set of bilateral donors, with Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, and Austria among the long-standing ones.

For Nepalese professionals ICIMOD is one of the more attractive employers in Kathmandu because it is headquartered here, so the full range of roles is on the doorstep rather than a resident mission's subset. Technical positions cover hydrology, glaciology, remote sensing and GIS, climate science, atmospheric science, ecology, agriculture and rangelands, gender and social science, economics, and disaster risk reduction. Because ICIMOD runs regional data platforms (the SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya programme is the best known), it also recruits data scientists, geospatial developers, web and systems staff, and communications and knowledge management people. Then there is the usual institutional layer: finance, HR, procurement, grants and partnerships, and administration.

Hiring falls into a few tracks. Regular staff positions are open to nationals of all eight member countries and are graded on a common scale, so a Nepalese candidate competes regionally rather than on a national pay band. Short-term consultancies and research associate contracts are the highest-volume entry point and often go to Nepalese specialists on domestic fieldwork. ICIMOD also runs a fairly active internship and fellowship stream for master's and PhD students, and it periodically hosts visiting researchers.
